Newcomer Considerations

This page provides considerations when engaging with families from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities. Texas public schools serve over 120 languages with a continuous growth of emergent bilingual students.

Factors to be Considered with Newcomers

The length of time they have been in the country, socioeconomic status, educational background, and reason for moving to the U.S.

As community members, it is important to remember to

  • Create a classroom environment that is accepting of all students with various backgrounds and customs
  • Learn about the intent behind students’ communication rather than reacting negatively to the communication style itself
  • Listen to what students say rather than to how they say it
  • Encourage all students to participate in class discussions and activities, at their level of comfort
